While the principles of the Qur'an and the Sunnah are permanent, it is the nature of Islamic jurisprudence to facilitate for human beings the application of those principles to their activities and dealings. Over the centuries, these have been formulated and elaborated upon by successive generations of learned jurists, through interpretation, analogy, consensus and disciplined research. Islamic jurisprudence may be defined as a process by means of which jurists derive sets guidelines, rules and regulations (the Shari'ah) from the principles of the Qur'an and the Sunnah.
